Baseball Defeats Pitt-Bradford to Win Third AMCC Championship

BRADFORD, MD - The Frostburg State baseball team won its third AMCC championship and first since 1998. The Bobcats defeated the top seeded Pitt-Bradford Panthers 13-10 in ten innings to take the conference crown as the lowest seed in the tournament.

In a game were both teams rallied with big innings, FSU (25-17) survived a ninth-inning breakdown to win in extra innings.

The Bobcats trailed early, surrendering two runs in the bottom of the first. However, they rebounded to score two runs in each of the next three innings.

In the second an RBI-single by freshman Todd Holmes (West Perry/New Bloomfield, Pa.) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Chris Jones (Towson High/Baltimore, Md.) tied the game at 2-2.

In the third, junior Scott Feller (American Heritage/Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior Ryan Hamerski (Sherwood/Olney, Md.) scored on a two-run double by senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick/Brunswick, Md.).

In the fourth, FSU extended the lead to 6-2 on a two-run homerun by Feller.

However, in the bottom half of the inning the Panthers regained the lead by scoring five runs knocking Bobcat starter senior Dan Sidorowicz (St. Mary's Ryken/Leonardtown, Md.) out of the game.

Sidorowicz went three plus innings and allowed five earned runs in the no decision.

FSU reclaimed the lead in the fifth as they scored four runs on a Holmes RBI-single and then a three-run bomb by Jones.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers scored one to cut the Bobcat lead to 10-8. FSU turned to the bullpen as freshman Frank Sutton (Robert C. Byrd/Clarksburg, W.Va.) and sophomore Collin Bednar (Glen Burnie/Millersville, Md.) pitched the final four and two-thirds innings.

After Sutton kept Pitt-Bradford scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth, Bednar gave up two runs, one earned in the ninth sending the championship game into extra frames.

In the top of the tenth, senior Sean Davis (Sherwood/Olney, Md.) was hit by a pitch to start and was advanced to third on a Feller single. On a attempted bunt, Hamerski popped it up leading to a double-play as Feller could not retreat to first in time.

With two outs and Davis still at third, junior Lance Williams (Woodson/Fairfax, Va.) scored Davis as he reached on a Panther error. He then proceeded to steal second to put himself into scoring position.

Senior Chris Baugher (Brunswick/Frederick, Md.) followed with an infield single, advancing Williams to third. Both runners were then driven home on a two-out triple by senior Kevin Romanik (Millville/Millville, N.J.).

In the bottom of the tenth, Bednar closed the door earning his second win of the season and securing the AMCC title for the Bobcats.

On the afternoon, the Bobcats received tremendous play from: Chris Jones, who went 2-4 including a homerun, four RBI and two runs scored; Todd Holmes, who went 3-6 with two RBI and a run scored; Justin Wilt, who went 3-6 with two RBI and three runs scored; Scott Feller, who went 3-6 including a homerun, two RBI and two runs scored; and Kevin Romanik, who went 2-5 with two key RBI.
