Baseball Downs Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL — The Frostburg State baseball team downed Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 10-1 Saturday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fl.

The game went scoreless through the first three innings until Frostburg State (6-5) took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) hit a double to right center scoring senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) and freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

In the fifth inning, FSU took a 3-0 lead when Wilt singled to left center scoring senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) who reached on an infield single and then stole second.

The Bobcats added to their lead in the sixth inning on a RBI double by freshman Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) followed by a Peake solo home run in the seventh, pushing the Frostburg State lead to 5-0.

The Trailblazers got on the board in the seventh inning when Mike Sucharewski singled into center field scoring Tom Hevey.

FSU put the game out of reach in the eighth inning, however, scoring five runs and extending the lead to 10-1. Gitzen started the scoring with a single to right allowing sophomores Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) to cross home plate. Gitzen later scored when junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) singled to left. Mahan then stole second allowing Williams to score on the throw. The next batter, Peake, brought the scoring to a close knocking in Mahan on an infield single.

Senior Dan Lindner (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out four. Steve Hemingway lasted 5 2/3 innings for Massachusetts giving up four runs on eight hits while walking four.

Peake led the Bobcats at the plate going 4-for-5 with four hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Gitzen and Holmes also recorded two RBIs on the afternoon.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Carthage for a double-header at 12:30 pm.
