Baseball Downs Medaille in AMCC Action

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team defeated Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille, 12-10, Saturday afternoon pushing its winning streak to 11 games. The contest was a completion of a double-header that began on March 26. FSU won the opener 5-1 but game two was never started due to bad weather.

The Bobcats (17-8, 10-0 AMCC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) scored on a Medaille error.

The Mavericks (1-6, 1-6 AMCC) tied the ballgame in the second on a Todd Negrych run before FSU sophomores Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) and Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) scored on an error giving the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.

In the third, Medaille tied the game with two runs but Frostburg State answered with RBIs from freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke) and sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) followed by a Maverick error that allowed senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T.Woodson) to score.

With the Bobcats holding a 6-3 lead at the start of the sixth, Medaille rallied scoring three runs to tie the game. Saladin started the rally with a two-out walk. He later scored on a Rob Falco RBI single and Kellen Owen tied the game with a two-run single that scored Steve Greico and Tom Wasielewski.

In the bottom of the frame, Frostburg State scored six runs to increase its lead to 12-6. With the bases loaded, Barone was hit by a pitch allowing Holmes to score the go-ahead run. Senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) then singled to left field scoring two runs. Gitzen later added an RBI-single and Speights smacked a double that scored two.

Medaille scored two runs in the seventh to close the gap to 12-8. In the ninth, the Mavericks made a charge putting their first two batters on base thanks in part to a Bobcat error. Nick Andreassi singled to center scoring Jeremy Callahan and Wasielewski later added a one-out single to cut the deficit to 12-10. Junior pitcher Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) ended the threat with a strikeout and a ground out to earn his first save of the season.

Senior Andrew Byer (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) worked 1 1/3 innings in relief allowing two runs on one hit to improve to 2-0 on the season. Bobcat starter Collin Bednar (Salisbury, Md./Glen Burnie) went 5 2/3 innings giving up one earned run on five hits and striking out 10. Don Jablonski took the loss for Medaille giving up three runs.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday, April 14 when they host Washington & Jefferson for a single, nine-inning game at 3:00 pm.
