Baseball Drops Opening Game of AMCC Tournament to Pitt-Bradford

ERIE, PA - Pitt-Bradford blew open a tight contest with four unearned runs in the fifth inning en route to a 13-5 win over Frostburg State in the opening game of the AMCC Tournament Friday morning at Penn State Behrend.

The Bobcats will meet the loser of Friday's second game between top seed Penn State Behrend and No. 4 Penn State Altoona later this afternoon. The Panthers will take on the winner of the Behrend/Altoona contest Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

Frostburg State (16-11), the tournament's No. 3 seed, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI-double by senior Chris Hammond (Brookville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown CC)).

Pitt-Bradford (24-4), the No. 2 seed, answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-ground out before scoring three times in the third to build a 4-1 advantage.

FSU pulled to within a run in the fourth on a lead off home run by senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) and a two-out RBI-single by sophomore Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville).

Jesse Biemel smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the frame to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead, but FSU answered in the top of the fifth.

Junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo) led off with a single and moved to third on an error. Junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) then laced a triple to plate Wilkins, and Mannon came home on a sacrifice fly by Hammond to trim UPB's lead to 6-5.

However, FSU committed three errors in the bottom of the inning that led to four Panther runs as UPB opened a 10-5 lead. Ryan Briskar hit a solo home run in the sixth, and the Panthers tacked on two more unearned runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Nick Eichenlaub earned the win for Pitt-Bradford, allowing five runs on 11 hits in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Bobcat junior Dave Huber (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Montgomery-Germantown)) took the loss after surrendering five runs on 10 hits in four innings of work.

Sophomore Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken pitched four innings of relief, allowing just five hits and one earned run.
