Baseball Drops Pair on Opening Day

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - Frostburg State dropped its first two games of the year in the Chowan College Invitational Friday. The Bobcats lost to Apprentice 7-1 before falling to Western Connecticut State 8-4.

In FSU's first game of the day, Ben Jones tossed a two-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Apprentice to the 7-1 win.

The Builders (5-0) jumped out early, smacking a pair of solo home runs in the first inning.

Apprentice then tacked on three more runs on four hits in the second and never looked back.

Frostburg State (0-1) avoided the shutout when senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Freshman Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) singled in the third and junior Lance Williams (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) doubled in the seventh for FSU's two hits.

Senior Brent Lutz (Toms Brook, Va./Central) took the loss after giving up five earned runs in two innings.

In their second game of the day, the Bobcats dropped an 8-4 decision to Western Connecticut State.

FSU took a 2-0 lead in the third after RBI-singles by senior Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and junior Scott Feller (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage).

WCSU (1-0) rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth. Junior Adam Kaplan provided the big blow with a three-run double.

The Bobcats pulled even in the home half of the inning as Holmes and junior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) laced RBI-singles, but the Colonials moved ahead for good with a three-run fifth before adding another run in the sixth.

The game was called after six innings due to darkness.

Junior Lou Parise picked the win, giving up four runs over four innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Bobcat senior Chris McGarvey (Fallentimber, Pa./Glendale) suffered the loss in relief, allowing three runs in 2/3 of an inning.

Frostburg State will look for its first win of the year Saturday when it takes on host Chowan at 2:30 pm.
