Baseball Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Frostburg State opened the 2005 season by dropping a doubleheader to Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Captains took game one 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 3-0 victory in game two.

In the opener, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) smacked a lead-off double and later scored on a groundout by sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry).

However, Christopher Newport (2-0) answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double by John Corbin and added another run on a solo homer by Jason Moody in the third.

FSU threatened in the fourth, putting runners on second and third with none out, but the Captains worked out of the jam with a strike out, an out at the plate and a ground out.

CNU then put the game out of reach with five runs — including four unearned — in the bottom of the sixth.

Captain starter Mike Cosby allowed one run on six hits and struck out four in five innings of work to earn the victory.

Bobcat junior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

In game two, Eben Brower allowed just one hit and struck out nine over five innings as the Captains posted the 3-0 win.

Corbin doubled home a run in the second and CNU added two more in the third to complete the scoring.

Brower did the rest, holding the Bobcats hitless over the first four innings before allowing a single by FSU sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) in the fifth.

The Bobcats put runners on second and third in the inning, but Brower used a flyout and strikeout to end the threat.

Kenny Moreland then came in for the save, striking out four in two innings.

Bobcat senior starter Dan Lindner (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) took the loss after three runs on seven hits and striking out three in five innings.

Frostburg State returns to action February 19 when it visits Greensboro for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
