Baseball Drops Season-Opening Slugfest to Rowan

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Freshman Irvin McFarland laced a two-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth inning to help Rowan University outlast Frostburg State, 11-8, in a wild season-opener for the Bobcats Saturday afternoon at Christopher Newport University's Captains Park.

FSU's following game versus host CNU was rained out.

The Bobcats (0-1) got off to a less-than-stellar start, falling behind 7-0 after two innings before roaring back.

Junior catcher Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) put FSU on the board in the second frame, as he singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown JC)).

FSU then cut its deficit to 7-6 with a five-run third. Sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) began the rally with a run-scoring single, and Mannon later added a two-run single to make it 7-4. Farmer followed with a single to left field that scored junior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest), who walked earlier, and Mannon came home on an error on the same play.

The Bobcats capitalized on a pair of Rowan errors in the fifth to move in front, 8-7. Davis and Mannon both reached on infield miscues, and senior Chris Hammond (Brookville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown JC)) drove both runners in with a single to give FSU its first lead of the day.

However, the Profs (1-1) rallied in the sixth, as McFarland won a 10-pitch battle with Bobcat junior reliever Dave Huber (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Montgomery-Germantown JC)), lacing a two-run single on a 3-2 pitch to put Rowan back in front for good.

Rowan tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.

The Profs knocked FSU starter Hammond around early, as the righthanded fireballer gave up seven runs on eight hits is 1 2/3 innings. Rowan scored six times in the second behind three run-scoring singles and a bases-clearing double by freshman Mike Rucci.

Huber (0-1) pitched two scoreless innings before giving up McFarland's go-ahead hit. Huber allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Freshman Tom McCullen picked up the win in relief for Rowan.

Mannon led FSU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Junior shortstop Dave Sanchez (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) also collected a pair of hits for the Bobcats.

Rucci paced Rowan with a 2-for-3, four-RBI afternoon, while senior Tim Staszewski finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

FSU returns to action on Friday when it visits North Carolina Wesleyan for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
