Baseball Earns First Win of Season With 7-5 Win Over Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Frostburg State baseball team earned its first win of the 2007 season with a 7-5 win over Greensboro, Sunday afternoon.

FSU (1-4) rallied from a 2-0 deficit and used a five-run eighth inning to down GC (7-5) for its first win. Greensboro made things interesting in the ninth with three runs to narrow the score to 7-5 but FSU held off the comeback.

Senior Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and junior Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) led the Bobcats at the plate. Holmes was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, a homerun and a run scored while Daddura was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a double.

Junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) got the start on the mound for Frostburg State earning the win after tossing 7.0 innings and allowing five hits, two runs and fanning three. Kevin Showe took the loss for the Pride after allowing five unearned runs on three hits in the eighth inning.

GC opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Travis Brewer hit a two-out two-RBI single to right field giving the hosts the early 2-0 lead.

FSU answered in the fifth with a pair of runs to tie the score at 2-2. Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led off the inning with a double to left field. Peake scored when the next batter, Daddura, doubled down the right field line. Daddura later scored on an error by Greensboro’s third baseman.

With the score still knotted at 2-2 heading into the eighth, Frostburg State scored five runs to take a 7-2 lead. Freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) reached base with a leadoff error and advanced to second on a sac bunt by sophomore Bryan Short (Ashburn, Va./Paul VI). After junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Peake were walked to load the bases, Daddura singled up the middle plating Derr and Speights to give the Bobcats a 4-2 lead. Holmes then hit a three-run homer to right field scoring Daddura and Peake to push the FSU lead to 7-2.

GC attempted a comeback in the ninth with three runs. With runners on the corners, Kyle Bolick smacked a single up the middle to score the first run of the inning. Dale Martin later hit an infield single that scored Derek Shanaberger and with two outs Pat Burgess doubled home Bolick to cap the scoring.

FSU returns to action on Friday against Waynesburg at the Hampden-Sydney Tournament.
