Baseball Earns Fourth-Straight Win with Sweep of Hilbert

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team won its fourth-straight game Sunday afternoon after sweeping Hilbert in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play at Bob Wells Field.

The Bobcats (14-7, 5-1 AMCC) pounded out a combined 28 hits and scored 31 runs to defeat the Hawks (1-13, 1-3 AMCC) 16-3 in game one and 15-5 in game two. Junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) was a combined 5-for-8 with five runs, four RBIs, two stolen bases and a double.

FSU wasted little time in game one, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBIs from senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) and sophomore Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)). Sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) highlighted the inning when his team-leading fourth homerun bounced off the top of the centerfield fence.

FSU added two runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 5-0. In the third, junior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) had a two-run double to help push the lead to 9-0.

After Hilbert scored a run in the top of the fourth, the Bobcats extended their advantage to 13-1 with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) had an RBI and scored a wild pitch while Jones doubled home two scores.

The Hawks managed two runs in the top of the sixth and FSU brought the scoring to a close in the home half of the inning with RBIs from freshmen Andrew Sacks (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll), Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) and Pat Hendricks (New Milford, Conn./New Milford).

Sophomore John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) earned his third win the season lasting 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six.

Barone and Mahan each had three hits and two runs in the opener as all but one of the Bobcat starters scored at least a run.

In the nightcap, FSU scored eight runs in the third inning to blow open a 3-2 ballgame on its way to a 15-5 win.

Frostburg State trailed 2-1 in the third inning when junior Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) hit a two-run homer to left field that gave the Bobcats the lead for good.

In the third inning, sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) had two RBIs while Mahan, Holmes and Mitchell each had one to lead FSU to an 11-3 lead.

Jones and Mahan recorded RBIs in the fourth as Frostburg State added four runs to open a 15-4 lead. The Hawks scored once in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.

Junior Mike Tiller (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) won his second game of the season throwing 5.0 innings allowing four runs on nine hits while fanning five.

Mahan was 3-for-4 with three hits, two RBIs, a double and a run scored while Daddura was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. As was the case in the opening game, all but one of the FSU starters scored at least a run.

FSU returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
