Baseball Earns Victory Over St. Norbert

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL — The Frostburg State baseball team rallied late to defeat St. Norbert 7-6 on a rain soaked Wednesday afternoon in the Port Charlotte Invitational Tournament. The regularly scheduled nine inning game was called after the seventh inning due to sloppy conditions and lightning.

St. Norbert struck first scoring one run on a Nick Olsen single to center in the top of the first inning.

The Knight lead didn’t last long as Frostburg State (7-8) took the lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) started the Bobcat rally scoring junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) with a RBI single. Freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) then doubled down the right field line scoring Wilt and freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point).

In the third inning, the Knights scored three runs backed by a passed ball and RBIs from Olsen and Thomas. St. Norbert added to its lead in the fourth scoring two runs on a FSU error taking a 6-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Speights smacked a bases-loaded double into left center scoring Mahan and sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac) closing the Knight lead to 6-5. Two batters later, Peake tied the ballgame with a RBI signal that allowed Holmes to cross the plate. Senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) completed the first FSU come-from-behind victory of the season with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Speights giving the Bobcats a 7-6 victory.

Peake led FSU going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Olsen led the Knights with two hits, two RBIs and one run.

Senior Andrew Byer (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) pitched three innings in relief allowing just two hits and no earned runs in picking up the win. Andy Schwantes pitched 3.1 innings for St. Norbert giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss.

FSU’s afternoon game against Wisonsin - Stevens Point was cancelled due to weather.

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they host Medaille at 1:00 pm.
