Baseball Edged By North Carolina Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, NC — Brett Schultz hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lead host North Carolina Wesleyan to a 6-5 win over Frostburg State Friday afternoon at Bauer Field.

The Battling Bishops (4-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Schultz smacked an RBI-triple and later scored on an error.

The Bobcats (0-2) then moved in front with a four-run fifth. Sophomore Ryan Hamerski and junior Pat Fortunato hit back-to-back singles with one out, and junior Dave Sanchez reached on an error to load the bases. Hamerski then scored on a passed ball , and Fortunato came home on another error tie the game, 2-2.

With two outs, senior Steve Simpson laced an RBI-single to put FSU in front, 3-2, and junior Jake Mannon followed with another run-scoring single to give the Bobcats a two-run cushion.

North Carolina Wesleyan, which improved to 11-0 all-time versus Frostburg State, took the lead for good with a three-run seventh.

Ray 'Mon Bizzell reached on a one-out bunt single, advanced to second on a passed ball and took third on an infield error. Matt Elsworth then smacked a two-out single to plate Bizzell, and Schultz followed with his go-ahead single one batter later.

The Battling Bishops added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI-triple from Bizzell.

Frostburg State tried to rally in the top of the ninth as junior Tim Wilkins scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Sean Davis. The Bobcats had runners at first and third with two outs, but Mike Girouard got Simpson to hit into another fielder's choice to end the game.

N.C. Wesleyan's Rodney Harris picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while freshman Billye Hollister took the loss for FSU, giving up three runs — none earned — and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Schultz led the Battling Bishops with a 2-for-3, three-RBI performance.
