Baseball Eliminated from AMCC Tournament by Penn State Behrend

ERIE, PA — Penn State Behrend broke a 2-2 tie with a seven-run third inning, and junior T.J. Aldrich held Frostburg State to just three hits as the Lions downed the Bobcats, 15-2, in the loser's bracket final of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The top-seeded Lions will advance to tomorrow's championship action, where they will meet No. 3 Pitt-Bradford. The Panthers handed the Lions a 3-1 loss earlier Saturday, so Penn State Behrend will need to defeat Pitt-Bradford twice to win the title.

The Lions (25-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-ground out by senior Jason Karas and an RBI-single by senior Chris Shearer.

Frostburg State (17-11) scored twice in the top of the third to tie the game.

Junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown JC)) began the inning with a walk, and sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) followed with a single. Junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo) later plated both runners with a double.

The deadlock was short-lived, however, as the Lions exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Penn State Behrend benefitted from two hit batters and a pair of Bobcat errors in the outburst.

Penn State Behrend put the game out of reach with six runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run by Karas. The game was stopped after 6 1/2 innings due to tournament's 10-run rule.

Aldridge kept the FSU offense at bay all afternoon, allowing just three hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Bobcat sophomore Rob DeSanto (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) allowed five hits and four earned runs in two innings. The Lions then roughed up freshman Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) for six earned runs on eight hits in three innings of work.

Frostburg State will return to action on Tuesday when it takes on Juniata in a doubleheader at the Hot Stove Fields in Cumberland beginning at 3:00 p.m.
