Baseball Falls to Eastern Mennonite 4-3

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Four different players drove in a run for Eastern Mennonite as it defeated Frostburg State 4-3 in collegiate baseball action, Wednesday.

FSU (9-6) struggled at the plate recording just seven hits while EMU (4-14) had 13 hits, three in both first and second innings accounting for three of its four runs.

Junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) got FSU on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run homerun to leftfield, his first of the season. Junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)), who led off the game with a walk, scored on Speights’ bomb.

EMU answered in the bottom of the first with one run. The Royals led off the inning with back-to-back singles and after FSU recorded the first out of the inning, EMU had yet another single to load the bases. The fifth batter of the inning, Andrew Pittman, then grounded out to second base, scoring Brandon Zollman.

In the bottom of the second, Eastern Mennonite took a 3-2 lead after plating two runs. Zollman doubled home Chad Johns to even the score at 2-2 and Zach Hawke had an RBI ground out to give the hosts a 3-2 edge.

The Royals threatened in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Cody Davis led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Zollman then advanced Davis to third with a single to center. Freshman relief pitcher Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) worked his way out of the two-on one-out jam with a pick off at first base and a foul out down the first base line. In the fifth, the Royals loaded the bases and freshman Rob Mathias (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Potomac State)), who entered the game for Main, struckout Davis to end the inning.

However, Eastern Mennonite added one run to its lead in the seventh. Max Kelly was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Johns. He later scored on sacrifice fly by Davis.

In the eighth, senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) led off the inning with a solo homerun to narrow the Royal lead to 4-3. Unfortunately, that would be the final of the contest as the Bobcats were unable to get anything going in the ninth.

Junior Frank Sutton (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert Byrd) suffered the loss for FSU pitching just two innings and allowing three Royal runs on six hits.

Justin Martin earned the win for the hosts pitching 4.0 innings and allowing just two runs in the first inning. Zollman, who was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, picked up the save after pitching the final 1.1 innings for EMU.

FSU returns to action on Friday when it faces Rowan in Port Charlotte, Fla.
