Baseball Falls to Gwynedd-Mercy 5-3 On Walk-Off Homerun

BOYERTOWN, Pa. — Sophomore Tim McMenamin hit a two-out, two-run, walk-off homerun in the 10th inning to lift No. 4 seeded Gwynedd-Mercy to a 5-3 win over No. 5 seeded Frostburg State in game one of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium, Wednesday.

FSU‘s season-high nine-game winning streak came to end in the loss and the Bobcats now sit at 31-12 overall while the Griffins improve to 31-10.

The Bobcats will now face No. 1 seed Kean (35-8) tonight at 8:00 pm.

Frostburg State trailed 3-2 heading into the ninth inning when sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick). Junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) then singled to center scoring Clark for the game-tying run.

In the 10th inning, Gwynedd-Mercy’s Nick DiEnno drew a two-out walk and McMenamin hit his sixth homerun of the season to give GMC the win.

The Griffins opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Senior Anthony Capella ripped a ball down the leftfield line for a double and remained at second after a pair of flyouts to center before the Griffins rattled off three-straight hits to take an early 2-0 lead.

Senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) put Frostburg State on the board in the top of the fourth with an opposite-field homerun.

GMC pushed its lead back to two, 3-1, with a single run in the fifth. However, FSU used another solo homerun to pull to within one when junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) hit his team-leading 11th bomb of the season.

Senior Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) tossed 4.1 innings in relief suffering his first loss of the season while Ryan Reynolds earned the win for GMC after tossing 5.0 innings.
