Baseball Opens AMCC Play With Sweep of Penn State Behrend

FROSTBURG, Md. — In the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener for both schools, Frostburg State swept Penn State Behrend Monday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.

FSU (13-8, 2-0) took game one, 11-4 after rallying from a 2-1 deficit with a six-run third inning. FSU then captured the win in the second game, 2-1 after trailing 1-0 in the third inning.

Freshman Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) pitched a complete game for the Bobcats pushing his record to 3-2. He allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out 11. Eric Nachreiner suffered the loss for the Lions after giving up four runs on three hits in just 2.0 innings of work.

FSU, which trailed 2-1 heading into the third, exploded for six runs and a 7-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Brian Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) led off the inning with a walk. After he stole second, senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) walked and junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) singled up the middle plating Burke for the first run of the inning. Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) then hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Gitzen to give FSU the lead for good, 3-2.

Senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) singled home Speights for a 4-2 edge while Burke recorded a bases loaded walk scoring Barone and senior Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning.

Frostburg State added three runs to its total the very next inning for a 10-2 advantage. The first run came on a bases loaded walk and the second was recorded on a balk by PSB pitcher Ryan Antolik. Holmes recorded the final run when he hit a sac fly to center allowing Peake to score.

Penn State Behrend scored one run in the fifth and the sixth to narrow the gap to 10-4. However, FSU added one insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Holmes was walked with the bases loaded, scoring senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll).

In all, the Lion pitching staff walked 15 FSU batters while recording just one strikeout in the opener.

In game two, Burke and Gitzen recorded the only RBIs for the Bobcats in the close 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) tossed a complete game and earned the win, improving to 3-1 on the season. He allowed one run, none earned, on five hits while fanning five. David Koerbel took the loss after giving up two runs on four hits in six innings.

Josh Fyffe singled home Dustin Dubensky in the top if the third as PSB took a 1-0 lead. The edge wouldn’t last long as FSU took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) hit a two-out single to right to start the offensive output for the Bobcats. Burke then doubled to center scoring Clark to tie the game at 1-1. Gitzen, the next batter, then singled home Burke for the final run of the game.

The two starters would hold the game in check the rest of the way combing to allow just three hits.

FSU returns to the field on Saturday when it travels to Lake Erie for a doubleheader at noon.
