Baseball Picked Second in AMCC Pre-Season Coaches Poll, While Davis Shares Pre-Season Player of the Year Honors

GIBSONIA, PA — Frostburg State has been picked to finish second in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, while senior second baseman Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) shared AMCC Pre-Season Co-Player of the Year honors according to a vote by the league's head coaches released last Friday.

The Bobcats received three first-place votes but were edged for the top spot by defending champion Penn State Behrend, which earned four first-place nods.

FSU finished 31-12-1 overall last year and tied with Penn State Behrend (33-10) for the regular-season crown with a 9-3 league mark.

The Lions defeated the Bobcats in the AMCC Tournament to win their first league title.

Pitt-Bradford (21-17, 8-4 AMCC),which won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002, was selected to finish third.

Davis and Penn State Behrend senior outfielder Adam Best shared the Pre-Season Player of the Year award.

Davis earned third-team ABCA Mid-Atlantic Regional All-America honors in 2003 after posting one of the most impressive seasons in FSU history.

He led FSU with a .433 batting average, a school-record 65 hits, five triples, 44 RBIs, 99 total bases, five sacrifice flies and 23 stolen bases.

He also ranked second on the team with 15 doubles, 23 extra-base hits, a .660 slugging percentage (.660) and a .489 on-base percentage, and he placed third with 39 runs scored.

Davis also earned first-team All-AMCC and first-team All-ECAC honors.

Best ranked fifth in the nation with a school-record .493 batting average, had a school-record 71 hits, scored 57 runs and stole 27-of-30 bases.

Penn State Behrend junior Jason Shaffer was tabbed the AMCC Pre-Season Pitcher of the Year. He was 7-1 with one complete game in 2003.
