Baseball Pounds Lake Erie in Doubleheader Sweep

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Junior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener and senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T.Woodson)and sophomore Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) each homered twice in the nightcap at Frostburg State swept host Lake Erie 12-0 and 23-3 in AMCC baseball action Saturday afternoon at Recreation Park.

In game one, Hollister (6-1) allowed two singles in the third, another in the fourth and one more in the sixth en route to his sixth straight victory. The lefthander struck out seven and walked three to earn his second shutout of the season.

The Bobcats (19-9, 12-0 AMCC) took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) was hit by a pitch to start the game and later scored on a single by Williams.

FSU held its slight lead before blowing the game open with nine runs in the fourth.

Gitzen was hit by a pitch again with the bases loaded to plate the first run and freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) drew a bases-loaded walk to score another run.

Sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) was later hit by a pitch with the bags packed to make it a 4-0 contest, and senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) laced a two-run single before Barone came home on an error.

Senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) then capped the inning with a three-run homer to push FSU’s lead to 10-0.

The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Freshman Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) hit a solo homer - the first of his career - and sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) singled and later scored thanks to two Lake Erie errors.

FSU scored early and often in game two en route to the easy win.

The Bobcats plated four runs in the first behind RBI doubles by Gitzen and Wilt and tacked on two more runs in both the second and third innings.

Williams and Webb smacked back-to-back solo shots in the second, before Gitzen laced an RBI double and Speights added a run-scoring single in the third to make it 8-0.

Lake Erie (5-24, 1-9) got on the board in the bottom of the third on Anthony Beckham’s two-run single, but FSU quickly responded with three runs in the fourth and nine more in the fifth.

Jones doubled home two runs and later scored on an error in the fourth, and Webb blasted a two-run homer before freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) later added a three-run shot to highlight the fifth.

Lake Erie plated its final run in the sixth on a fielder’s choice, but Williams blasted his second round-tripper of the day - a two-run shot - as part of a three-run seventh to put the final touches on the blowout.

Senior Andrew Byer (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) worked two innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory, allowing two hits and striking out four.

Webb finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, Williams went 4-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBIs and Speights was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Barone was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, while Peake was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Bobcats return to action Sunday when they host Dickinson in a single nine-inning contest starting at 1 pm.
