Baseball Rallies for 12-10 Win over Western Connecticut State

MURFREESBORO, NC - Frostburg State scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 12-10 win over Western Connecticut State in the consolation game of the Chowan Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats picked up their first victory of the year and are 1-3. WCSU fell to 1-3 with the loss.

The game was a scoring fest from the beginning, as WCSU scored four times in the top of the first.

FSU countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) laced an RBI-single to start the rally, and junior Scott Feller (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage) followed with a run-scoring double two batters later.

Freshman Brandon Merrill (St. Michael's, Md./St. Michael's) added an RBI-single and senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) capped the inning with a run-scoring fielder's choice.

The Colonials kept the pressure on in the second, plating five runs to open a 9-4 advantage.

The Bobcats closed to within 9-6 in the third on an RBI-ground out by Merrill and an RBI-single by Wilt and cut their deficit to one on a two-run single by junior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) in the fifth.

WCSU, which defeated FSU 8-4 Friday, tacked on another run in the seventh to build a 10-8 lead before the Bobcats scored four in the bottom of the eighth to move ahead for good.

Wilt began the inning with a solo home run, and freshman Mike Gitzen (Arlington, Va./Potomac Falls) pulled FSU even with an RBI-single.

Freshman Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) smacked a two-run single to cap the scoring.

Senior Chris McGarvey (Fallentimber, Pa./Glendale) threw just one pitch to earn the win. He induced a flyout to end the eighth.

Sophomore Jimmy Hardy (Myersville, Md./Middletown) earned his first career save by hurling a scoreless ninth.

Feller and Merrill were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Bobcats return to action Sunday, February 29 as they travel to Emory & Henry for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
