Baseball Slips Past Richard Stockton for 9-8 Victory

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. — Senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) was a perfect 5-for-5 from the plate as the Frostburg State baseball team slipped past Richard Stockton for a 9-8 victory Saturday on the second day of the Hampden-Sydney Tournament.

The Bobcats are now winners of three straight and sit at 3-4 on the season.

To go along with his five hits, Gitzen managed two RBI including two doubles and a homerun. Junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI while freshman Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Freshman pitcher Rob Mathias (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Potomac State)) earned the win for FSU after tossing 2.0 innings giving up three runs on three hits while fanning two. Sophomore Kyle Timme (Pasadena, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) picked up the save after pitching the final 2.0 innings and holding the Ospreys hitless.

Frostburg State scored one run in both first and third innings and later added four in the sixth and three in the seventh. Richard Stockton scored one run in the second and the sixth and plated three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

The final day of the tournament, including FSU’s game against Rutgers-Camden, has been cancelled due to the threat of bad weather.
