Baseball Splits With La Roche; Earns Top Seed in AMCC Tournament

FROSTBURG, Md. — Frostburg State freshman Allan Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Bobcats a 3-2 win and a split with La Roche in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Field. The Redhawks took the opener 4-2 but the Bobcats bounced back to win game two and clinch the top seed and home field advantage in the upcoming AMCC Tournament.

The Bobcats are now 23-10 overall and 15-1 in the AMCC, while La Roche falls to 18-14 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

In game two, Peake singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Bobcats to the 3-2 win. Freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) singled to start the inning and then stole second base. Sophomore Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) was then hit by a pitch and junior pinch hitter Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Peake laced his game-winning hit into left field.

Senior Dan Lindner (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) turned in another outstanding performance for FSU, pitching all eight innings and allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out 10. He won his fifth straight start to improve to 6-1 on the year.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Bobcats struck for two runs. Sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) led off with a single to center, advanced to third on a single by Speights and scored on single by Webb. Speights then gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead when he came home on an RBI single by sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry).

La Roche pulled even in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run single by Nate Bliss to force the extra inning. The Redhawks threatened in the top of the eighth loading the bases with two outs but Lindner recorded his final strikeout to work out of the jam.

In game one, Nick Wendell laced a two-run single in the fifth inning to snap a 2-2 tie as the Redhawks handed FSU its first conference loss of the season.

La Roche took a 2-0 lead in the top of third inning on RBI singles by Ryan Unger and Wendell, but FSU answered in the bottom of the frame by scoring two runs to tie the game.

Senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) and sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) hit back-to-back singles with one out before Gitzen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Speights then doubled just inside the left field line to score Baugher and Jones.

The Bobcats had a final chance in the seventh when Peake singled and senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) reached on a throwing error. However, reliever Ruben DeLeon earned the save with a line out and a ground out to end the game.

Junior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) pitched the complete game, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out four to fall to 6-2 on the season. Jayson Vaughn threw six innings allowing two runs on five hits and fanning four to take the win.

FSU returns to action on Thursday, April 28 when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a single nine-inning game at 6:00 pm.
