Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against St. Joseph's

GREENSBORO, NC — The Frostburg State baseball team swept a doubleheader against St. Joseph’s-Long Island Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium. The Bobcats took game one, 8-0, and won game two, 4-2.

Frostburg State (5-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one as sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) walked to lead off the game and laterescored on a ground out by sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) giving the Bobcats the early 1-0 advantage.

Frostburg State increased its lead to 2-0 in the second when senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) reached on an error and later scored from second base on a passed ball.

Three batters later, senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) and sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) drew back-to-back walks and both advanced on a passed ball. Freshman Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) then walked to load the bases, and Jones scored an infield throwing error to make it a 3-0 contest. Another infield error allowed Holmes to score giving the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.

FSU capped its scoring with four runs in the fifth. Wilt singled, and freshman pinch-runner Jose Auila(Rockville, Md./Bullis School) stole second base and scored on a passed ball. Freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) walked, and senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson), pinch-running for Peake, stole second base. Freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) then doubled down the left-field line to score Williams and give FSU a 6-0 cushion.

Mitchell reached base after being hit by a pitch and Speights scored when Jones reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop. Mitchell then crossed the plate when Jones was caught in a rundown attempting to steal second base to close the scoring for the Bobcats.

Junior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) pitched a seven-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking just two. He struck out the side in both the second and fourth innings and improved to 2-1 on the year.

Jack Monteserrato took the loss for St. Joseph’s (2-2), pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on two hits while walking five.

Jones led the way for FSU with two RBIs, two stolen bases and one run scored. Mahan, Gitzen and Speights each added an RBI for the Bobcats.

In game two, the Bobcats scored twice in the first and second innings and held off the Golden Eagles for the 4-2 win.

FSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI-singles by Williams and Speights and added two more runs in the second on a RBI-single by freshman Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) and a run-scoring triple by Gitzen.

St. Joseph’s got on the board in the fourth when Pat Chilton smacked a two-out double and scored on a single by Alex Regruto. The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to 4-2 in the sixth as Chilton led off with a walk and Regruto followed with a double to score Chilton and drive Bobcat senior starter Brad Cannon (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson) from the game.

Bobcat junior closer Collin Bednar (Salisbury, Md./Glen Burnie) entered the game and got into trouble after hitting Rich Rivera and walking Ryan Burdi to load the bases. However, Bednar got out of the jam with a strike out and ground out.

Cannon pitched five innings for Frostburg State giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out six in earning the win. Joseph Aanasio took the loss for the Golden Eagles, lasting just 2 1/3 innings and gving up six hits, four runs and three walks.

Speights went 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Bobcat attack.
