Baseball Sweeps Old Westbury; Wins Fifith Straight

RUTHER GLEN, Va. - The Frostburg State baseball team extended its winning streak to five games Saturday with a sweep of Old Westbury at the Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, Va.

FSU is now 5-4 on the season while OW opens the season 0-2.

The Bobcats captured game one 7-1 and needed 10 innings and a suicide squeeze in the nightcap to earn a 10-9 win.

In game one, the Bobcats broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Freshman starter Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) earned his first collegiate win after tossing a complete game allowing just one run on eight hits while fanning two.

At the plate, senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI while junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU))) also had a solid outing going 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.

In game two, Frostburg State used a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.

Junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led off the final inning with a single and later advanced to second after sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) was hit by a pitch. Burke then loaded the bases with an infield single and freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) plated Mitchell with the squeeze.

Burke also earned the win on the mound, pitching the final two innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out two. Senior Todd Holmes (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) tossed 3.0 innings, the sixth, seventh and eighth, allowing just two hits and holding Old Westburg scoreless.

Barone again led the Bobcats at the plate, going 1-for-1 with three RBIs while junior Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

FSU returns to the field tomorrow when it plays a single nine-inning game against Old Westbury at 11:00 am.
