Baseball Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team swept Pitt-Greensburg in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Field. FSU took game, 7-1, and game two, 11-2.

Pitt-Greensburg (4-5, 2-2 AMCC) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Rick Skolak singled home Steve D’Uva to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Frostburg State (14-8, 7-0 AMCC) exploded in the bottom of the inning scoring six runs on seven hits to open a 6-1 lead. Junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) started the scoring for FSU by knocking in sophomore Arthur Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) to tie the game. Mahan would later score on a single to left field by sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) to give the Bobcats the lead for good.

Senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) gave the Bobcats a 4-1 advantage with a single that allowed Gitzen and sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) to score. Sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) capped the inning with a two-run single that scored Williams and freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

Frostburg State freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) completed the scoring with a RBI single.

Senior Daryl Keys (Salem, N.Y./Salem) pitched the complete game, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four in earning his second win of the season. D’Uva took the loss for Pitt-Greensburg after giving up seven runs on 12 hits in four innings.

In the nightcap, Pitt-Greensburg again jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Dustin Mills RBI-single in the first inning.

The Bobcats answered in the second, taking a 2-1 lead. Barone led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Gitzen single to left. Senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) scored the second FSU run on a groundout by Speights.

UPG tied the ball game in the third inning, when Nick Hyduke walked with the bases loaded to score Nate Hissem.

With the help of two errors, FSU took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to open up a 6-2 lead. Holmes hit a one-out double and moved to third when Barone reached on an error. Senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) then reached on another error that allowed Holmes to score. Baugher followed with a double to drive in Barone and Mahan then doubled in Baugher and Wilt to complete the inning.

In the sixth, Holmes extended the lead to 7-1 with a solo home run to dead center field. Three batters later, Baugher laced an RBI-single to left field and later scored on a junior Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) ground out. Mahan and Speights each added RBI doubles to bring the scoring to a close.

Middle relief pitcher Matt Sillers (Columbia, Md./Pallotti) tossed five shutout innings giving up one hit while earning the win. UPG starter Mark Swetz threw 4.0 innings allowing six runs on nine hits in taking the loss.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they host Penn State Behrend at 1:00 pm.
