Baseball Sweeps Waynesburg on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. — Frostburg State used a four-run sixth inning to post a 6-3 win in the opener and senior Dan Lindner (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) pitched six innings allowing just two runs while striking out seven in an 11-2 victory in the nightcap as the Bobcats swept Waynesburg on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

Eight seniors were honored before playing their final regular-season games - Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick), Andrew Byer (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park), Brad Cannon (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson), Rob DeSanto (Rockville, Md./Wheaton), Daryl Keys (Salem, N.Y./Salem), Lindner , Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) and Justin Wilt(Knoxville, Md./Brunswick).

The Bobcats improve to 28-11 overall and Waynesburg falls to 12-22-1 overall.

In game one, Waynesburg scored two runs in the first inning to open and added a run in the second to take a 3-0 advantage. FSU answered in the bottom of the second when sophomore Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) led off the inning with solo home run. Sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) later singled and scored thanks to back-to-back Waynesburg errors cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Junior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and junior releif pitcher Collin Bednar (Salisbury, Md./Glen Burnie) combined to allow just three Yellow Jacket hits over the next four innings to keep the game within reach.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats rallied scoring four runs to a take a 6-3 lead. Williams doubled and later scored on a Barone single to tie game at three. After an FSU walk and a stolen base, Baugher hit a two-run single to center to give the Bobcats their first lead of the game, 5-3. Baugher later scored on an error to push the lead to three.

In the seventh, Bednar struck out two batters and used a fielder’s choice to preserve the win. He worked 1 2/3 innings and struck out two to earn the win in relief.

Hollister threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run on eight hits while striking out six. Yellow Jacket starter Justin Schrader took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits and fanning seven in 5 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, FSU scored at least one run in every inning highlighted by a four-run fifth to out pace the Yellow Jackets.

Williams got FSU on the board in the first inning singling home sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) to give FSU a 1-0 advantage. In the second, junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) tripled and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson), and sophomore Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) doubled in Holmes in the third to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Mike Majetic and Aaron Lillibridge each drove in a run for the Yellow Jackets to cut the Bobcat lead to 3-2. However, Williams smacked a two-run homerun in the bottom half the inning to push FSU’s lead back to three, 5-2.

The Bobcats added to their lead in the fifth scoring four runs. Jones got things started with an RBI single followed by a Gitzen sacrifice fly. Freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) capped the inning with a two-run single to give FSU a 9-2 lead.

Byer and DeSanto led off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles, and after a fielder’s choice, Mahan ripped a double to left to cap the Frostburg State scoring.

Lindner imrpoved to 7-1 on the season with the victory. Matt Popiolowski suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits in just 4 1/3 innings of work.

FSU returns to action Friday when it hosts Pitt-Bradford at 9:00 am in the first game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament.
