Baseball Takes Two from Penn State Altoona

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State captured its 20th win of the season Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Penn State Altoona in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at Bob Wells Field.

FSU (20-10, 11-3 AMCC) rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to take game one, 6-5, while in the nightcap, the hosts used three PSA (17-13, 8-8 AMCC) errors to win, 5-2.

Seniors Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) powered the Bobcats on the afternoon. In two games, Mahan was 5-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Jones was 4-for-7 with two runs and a homerun.

Jones led off the game with a single and scored when the next batter, Mahan, tripled to right field. FSU took a 2-0 lead when Mahan scored on a wild pitch.

In the third inning, Mahan doubled home sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Penn State Altoona answered, taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth. RJ Barnard, Ryan Gindlesperger and Matt Robuck all recorded RBIs during the outburst. One inning later, the Lions added a run to their lead when Gindlesperger doubled home Barnard.

In the fifth, Jones started a Frostburg State rally with a single to center and eventually scored on a sophomore Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)) sacrifice fly. The next batter, sophomore Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley), doubled home Mahan to tie the game and sophomore Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) drove home Barone for the go-ahead score.

The Lions were held to just one hit in each of the final two innings as FSU captured the victory.

Junior Mike Tiller (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) earned the win in relief, throwing 2.0 innings allowing just one run on four hits. Senior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) earned his first save of the season pitching one inning holding the Lions hitless in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Jones gave FSU the early 1-0 lead with a homerun in the top of the first. The Bobcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the second when Mahan singled home sophomore Brian Short (Ashburn, Va./Paul VI) and Jones scored on a PSA throwing error.

The Lions narrowed the gap to 3-1 in the fourth when Robuck singled home Tyler Weyant. However, Frostburg State pushed its lead back to three runs, 4-1, in the home half of the inning when Mahan tripled to left field and scored on a error by the right fielder.

The teams exchanged runs in the fifth to make the score 5-2. Weyant singled home Tony Petulla for Penn State Altoona, while Mitchell stole third and scored on a error by the shortstop.

Freshman Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) pitched 5.1 innings giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out four. Crystal earned his second save of the spring after tossing 1.2 hitless innings.

FSU returns to action on Saturday when it travels Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
