Baseball Thumps Rival Pitt-Bradford; Sweeps Doubleheader

FROSTBURG, Md. — Everybody hit for the Frostburg State baseball team as it scored 38 runs on 40 hits in a sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Pitt-Bradford, 24-3 and 14-5, Monday afternoon.

FSU closes out its conference regular-season play with a 25-13 overall record and a 13-5 league mark. UPB has now dropped four-straight games and sits at 19-11 overall and 9-7 in the AMCC.

In the 24-3 game-one thrashing, the Bobcats set season highs in runs (24), hits, (24), RBIs (23), total bases (36) and triples (2). Frostburg State plated runs in every inning including a 12-run outburst in the fifth.

Offensively, junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) each drove in four runs to lead the team. Speights was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a double while Clark was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Seniors Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) each went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs scored and homerun while junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The offensive output was more than plenty for FSU starter Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick). He earned his seventh win of the season giving up just three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Sophomore Kyle Timme (Pasadena, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) tossed the final 1.2 innings holding the Panthers scoreless and allowing just two hits. UPB used seven pitchers in the opener while UPB starter Nate Jones was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits.

The game was close early on as Peake drove home two runs in the first, but the visitors tied the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Gitzen gave FSU the lead for good with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Speights later singled home junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) to give the Bobcats a 4-2 advantage.

Clark singled home the first of his four RBIs in the third and Peake and Clark each had an RBI in the fourth leading up to the 12-run fifth. Holmes powered the fifth with three RBIs including a homerun while Webb hit a two-run homer and Clark had a two-run single.

Frostburg State ended the scoring with a five-run sixth. Speights doubled home two runs and sophomore Pat Hendricks (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) doubled home two more on his first hit of the season.

The nightcap didn’t prove any easier as FSU used a seven-run fourth to blow open a 4-3 ballgame and complete the sweep with a 14-5 win.

Junior leadoff hitter Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Gitzen continued his hot bat to the tune of 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Sophomore Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) earned the victory on the mound allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings. He improved his overall record to 6-1. Ricky Riesenberger took the loss giving up 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits in just 3.2 innings of work.

With the Panthers ahead 3-1 after the top of the third, Clark led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and he scored two batters later when Burke tripled to center field. Gitzen then homered to center, scoring Burke, to give FSU a 4-3 lead.

Mitchell, Burke and Gitzen recorded three-straight RBIs to start a two-out scoring spree to begin the fourth. After back-to-back walks, Holmes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Speights scored on an error to bring the the score to 9-3. Freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) capped the inning with a two-run single to center as Frostburg State led 11-3. The Bobcats scored an unearned run in the fifth and Burke drove home a pair of runs in the sixth to cap the scoring for the Bobcats. Meanwhile, Pitt-Bradford plated a single run in the fifth and seventh.

FSU awaits the final conference games for a couple AMCC teams before determining wether or it hosts the opening round of the AMCC Tournament at Bob Wells Field this weekend.
