Baseball Upsets No. 26 Ranked Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. — In its last regular-season game of the year, the Frostburg State baseball team upset No. 26 ranked Washington & Jefferson, 9-4, Tuesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.

FSU, ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region, is now 28-13 overall while W&J is 28-10.

The Bobcats held a slim 2-0 lead until a seven-run fifth inning gave the visitors a 9-0 cushion. The Presidents scored a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings but FSU held on for the win.

Freshman Zach Brathwaite (LaVale, Md./Allegany) earned the win for the Bobcats in his first collegiate start tossing 6.0 scoreless innings and giving up just five hits. After Washington & Jefferson cut the lead to 9-4, junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) came on in relief for the final 1.2 innings to seal the win. He struckout two batters and allowed just two hits.

Burke also led FSU at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Andrew Lydon (Southampton, N.J./Southampton (Burlington) also delivered for the Bobcats with a three-run double in the fifth.

Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) put Frostburg State on the board in third with a two-run homerun to center field.

In the fifth, Burke and senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) led off with back-to-back singles. Peake then drew a walk and junior Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) was hit by a pitch scoring Burke for the first run of the inning. Lydon then plated three more runs with his double to right center. Freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) walked and sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) tripled to score Lydon and Derr while Burke later singled home Clark for the final run of the fifth.

Chris Varacallo and Shaun Pfiel each drove home a run in the seventh and Michael Kennedy and Justin Benson drove home two more in the eighth for the Presidents.

Washington & Jefferson starter Dan Vietmeier suffered the first loss after allowing two runs on five hits in three innings of work.

FSU returns to action this weekend when it travels to the 2007 AMCC Tournament Final Four at by La Roche.
