Baseball Wins AMCC Championship for Second-Straight Season

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State defeated La Roche 16-8 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship Game to earn the league title for the second-straight season, Sunday.

With the win, FSU (31-13) earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament which begins Wednesday, May 16. The NCAA will announce where the regional tournaments will be held on Monday.

Frostburg State also became just the seventh team in school history to eclipse the 30-win plateau over the weekend and needs two wins in the regional to earn the second most wins in the 61-year history of the baseball program. The 1976 Bobcats hold the record with 35 victories (35-8-1).

The Bobcats, who needed just three wins to capture the crown, dominated the AMCC Tournament at the plate, pounding out a combined 66 hits while scoring 46 runs.

Senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and juniors Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) and Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) powered the Bobcats offensively in the win over LAR.

Gitzen was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Burke was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles, a triple and a stolen base while Peake was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a double.

Sophomore Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) earned his eighth victory on the mound this season. He pitched 5.2 innings allowing 14 hits and six runs. Derek Lear lost his second-straight game to FSU after allowing 11 runs on 12 hits in just 2.2 innings.

Frostburg State blew the game open early plating a pair of runs in the first and second innings before scoring seven in the third. FSU tacked on five more runs in the fifth.

Gitzen and Peake each had RBI singles in the first and while Burke and junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) recorded RBI doubles in the second. Burke and freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) powered the third knocking home a pair of runs each.

With Frostburg State leading 11-4 heading into the fifth, the Bobcats added five more runs for a 16-4 advantage. Mitchell had a two-run single while Peake, senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) each drove home one.

Dustin Kuhn and Lucas McCoy each had three hits and three RBI to lead the Redhawks in the loss.
