Baseball Wins Non-Conference Game Over Catholic

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team used runs in each of the first five innings to defeat Catholic 10-8 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats improve to 24-11 overall while the Cardinals fall to 11-26.

FSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) reached on error and scored on an error and sophomore Arthur Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) doubled in senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson).

The Bobcats added one run in the second and another in third to open a 4-0 lead. In the second, junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) knocked an RBI triple that scored senior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) while in the third Barone singled and later scored on a Cardinal error.

Catholic would cut into the Bobcat lead in the fourth scoring a run on a Bobcat error to make it 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Baugher drilled his third homer of the year over the left-field fence scoring freshman Allan Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) to give FSU a 6-1 lead.

The Cardinals made the score 6-2 in the fifth when Pedro Rivera scored on another Bobcat error.

The Bobcats answered for the second straight inning scoring four runs to open up a 10-2 lead. Senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick), sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and Baugher all had run-scoring singles and junior Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) had an RBI fielder’s choice to cap the inning.

Catholic scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to close the gap to 10-4. The Cards made a late charge in the eighth when Joe Mayer recorded an RBI single and Rivera knocked a two-run double to left to make the score 10-7. Bobcat freshman pitcher John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) then entered the game and sandwiched strikeouts around an RBI ground out to preserve the lead.

Senior Andrew Byer (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) closed out the ninth inning to earn his first save of the year.

Junior Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) pitched seven innings allowing just two earned runs on six hits while fanning nine to improve to 7-2 on the season. Mike Geraghty suffered the loss lasting just three innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
