Baseball's Winning Streak Ends at Ten With Loss to Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, PA — Frostburg State had its 10-game winning streak come to an end with a 9-4 loss to Pitt-Bradford in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Pitt Field.

With the win, the Panthers (21-5, 8-1 AMCC) earned the No. 2 seed for this weekend's AMCC Tournament to be held at regular-season champion Penn State Behrend. The Bobcats (16-10, 8-3), the No. 3 seed, will face Pitt-Bradford in Friday's opening game at 9:00 a.m.

Penn State Behrend (23-5, 11-1) will take on fourth-seeded Penn State Altoona (8-22, 3-7) at noon.

Against FSU, the Panthers scored four times with two outs in the opening and never looked back.

Dave Brown began the scoring with an RBI-double, and Williams hit a routine grounder that took a bad hop and sailed over FSU sophomore second baseman Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) to plate two more runs. J.J. Miller added a run-scoring single to cap the outburst.

The road-warn Bobcats, who arrived home from a twinight doubleheader in Baltimore Wednesday morning after 1 a.m. and then left at 6 a.m. for the five-hour trip to Bradford, looked to answer in the second.

FSU loaded the bases on three hit batters, and junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) scored FSU’s first run on a passed ball. However, Pitt-Bradford quelled the threat with an inning-ending double play.

UPB blew the game open with two runs in the second and three more runs in the third.

FSU had an opportunity to close the gap in the fifth, loading the bases with none out. Sophomores Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) and Eric Edelman (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, and junior Dave Sanchez was hit by a pitch.

Sophomore pinch-hitter Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was also hit by a pitch to plate Romanik, and sophomore Sean Davis drew another walk to score Edelman to make it a 9-3 contest.

However, Panther reliever Andy Guelcher recorded two straight strikeouts and a groundout to end the rally.

The Bobcats closed out the scoring in the seventh on an RBI-double by junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo).

Panther hurlers Bill Thorwart, John Kessner and Guelcher combined to hold Frostburg State to just two hits.
