Bobcat Men & Women Win AMCC Championships; Garner Earns NCAA Provisional Qualification

Grove City, Pa. ... The Frostburg State men's and women's swimming and diving teams captured their respective Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships held as part of the Grove City College Invitational this past weekend.

The Bobcat men scored 337 points to easily outdistance Penn State Altoona (180) and Penn State Behrend (170), while the FSU women posted 188 points to overcome Penn State Altoona (175) and Penn State Behrend (123).

Additionally, Bobcat head coach Chip Villarreal and assistant coach Sami Bausher were named AMCC Coaching Staff of the Year.

On the men's side, junior Jay Garner took home AMCC Most Valuable Swimmer honors after setting school records in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.98/second overall), 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.37/second) and 200-yard freestyle (1:45.31).

He earned provisional "B" qualification for the NCAA Championships in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, and he will look to better his times at Penn State University this Saturday.

Freshman Kevin Nolan eastablished a Bobcat record in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing fifth overall in 2:00.41, and he later joined Garner and teammates Ben Marrapodi and John Mayden on the 400-yard medley relay team that recorded a school-record 3:40.38.

Nolan also placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (54.38), while Mayden added an eighth-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.80).

Sophomore Matt Brew was eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:53.16), while junior Derrick Jackson finished 10th (23:24.19).

Freshman Andrew Mylnarski turned in a solid 241.90 to finish second in 1-meter diving. In women's action, junior Lauren Crystal highlighted the Bobcat effort with a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (26.21) and a 10th-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.21).

Sophomore Siona Walsh turned in a 1:07.49 to place eighth in the 100-yard backstroke, while fellow sophomore Jessie Bley came in 10th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 20:16.82.

Junior Cindy Reese placed third in the 1-meter diving with a score of 261.15.
