Bobcats Fall to Washington & Lee in NCAA South Region Semifinals

Newport News, Va. ... Ryan Nelson and David Kodack scored less than two minutes apart midway through the first half to lead top-seeded Washington & Lee to a 4-1 win over fourth-seeded Frostburg State in the South Region semifinals of the 2000 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship at Christopher Newport University Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats, who were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1983, ended their season with a 16-5 overall record and improved to 76-26-2 over the last five seasons.

The Generals are now 19-1 and advance to the region final against the winner of Saturday night's Greensboro/Christopher Newport match.

Nelson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 26:37 left in the first half, and Kodack put the Generals up 2-0 when he got loose in the box and sent a shot past Bobcat goalie Mike Pregnall.

Pregnall, who made five saves, was injured on the play but remained in the game before giving way to Jason Lawrence (one save) to start the second half.

Washington & Lee increased its lead to 3-0 on an Andrew Grimes goal just over five minutes into the second half before the Bobcats got on the board with 34:28 remaining in the game.

Fort Hill's Adam Fletcher took a cross from Gary Lesko behind the defense and lifted a shot over General keeper Tim Foley (five saves) from 15 yards out. It was Fletcher's team-high 19th goal of the season.

That would be as close as Frostburg State would get, however, and the Generals added the final goal when Bobcat defender sent a clearing attempt into his own net with 19:09 left to play.

The Bobcats were outshot 15-13 by W&L but held a 7-2 advantage in the second half. The Generals also held a 5-3 lead in corners.
