Bowery, Brown Lead Men's Basketball to Victory in AMCC Opener

FROSTBURG, MD — Junior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) scored a season-high 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and senior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./North County) added 22 points and a game-high nine assists to lead Frostburg State to an 87-76 win over Lake Erie in its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

The teams battled through a nip-and-tuck first half that featured three ties and four lead changes.

The Bobcats took a 21-16 lead nearing the halfway point of the stanza before Lake Erie went on a 10-0 run that spanned four minutes.

Frostburg State (4-3, 1-0 AMCC) responded with an 8-0 run of its own to move back in front, 29-26, at the 7:00 mark.

Brown began the stretch with a lay-up, and Bowery followed with a short jumper. Senior Elroy Henley (Owings Mill, Md./Randallstown) put the Bobcats ahead with a tip-in of a Bowery miss and added a pair of free throws to cap the spurt.

Lake Erie (3-5, 1-1) countered by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to build a 36-31 advantage and took a 43-38 lead into halftime.

The Storm shot a blistering 52.9 percent (18-of-34) from the field and held a 27-15 lead in rebounding in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Lake Erie continued to hold a slight lead in the opening moments of the second half, building a 52-46 edge on Nate Malensek's jumper at the 17:14 mark.

However, the Bobcats took advantage of their depth and quickness to score 12 straight points to move back in front for good.

Junior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the spurt, and his second trey put FSU up, 58-52, with 13:45 left.

Lake Erie closed to within three on its next possession, but FSU steadily increased its lead over the following 10 minutes and held an 85-69 advantage with 3:09 left.

Storm sophomore Nelson Colon scored consecutive baskets to cap a 7-0 run and make it an 85-76 game with 1:32 remaining, but Ernst capped the scoring with a jumper in the lane and Lake Erie missed its final three shots.

FSU hit 19-of-32 from the field in the second half and owned the glass, outrebounding the Storm, 21-10.

Ernst finished with 13 points, while Henley added 11 points.

Colon and sophomore Tony Tibayan led the Storm with 14 points each, while sophomore Mike Rustifo and junior Brandon Henderson added 12 points apiece.

The Bobcats return to action on Monday when they visit Mount Aloysius for a 7 p.m. game.
