Frostburg State University Student Activities, in collaboration with CES at FSU, will once again offer the exciting new underground club series, On the EDGE, featuring cutting-edge performers who stretch the boundaries of their art forms. All shows begin at 8:15 p.m. and feature informal table seating, comfortable couch and armchair seating, and food and beverage options.

Direct from Barbados, the Carib-pop band Cover Drive appears in a free performance on Thursday, Sept. 1, with a riveting outdoor performance in Delaney Plaza at the FSU Clock Tower. The group first achieved recognition while supporting Rihanna’s 2011 “Loud” tour and Kelly Clarkson’s 2012 “Stronger” tour. The group’s fresh sound blends elements of pop, Caribbean and hip-hop. The U.K. online magazine The Upcoming raved, “As soon as they arrived, Bajan quartet Cover Drive completely took over the main stage, exuding a magnificent energy.”

The funkadelic musicians of Mexico’s Troker arrive on Thursday, Oct. 6, for a raucous performance in the Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall in the Lane University Center. The Huffington Post stated that “Troker’s heady mix of free jazz, rock, funk and mariachi music is entirely instrumental, meaning there is no language barrier for foreign audiences to overcome.” Local musicians can experience the band’s distinctive style and the techniques of collective composition and improvisation in a free workshop led by Troker percussionist Frankie Mares. The workshop is limited to 20 participants; prior registration is required.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, the step dancers of Molodi Live present an intense, interactive performance in Lane Manicur Hall. Using only their bodies as instruments, Molodi blends collegiate stepping, tap, gumboots, beatbox and poetry with guerrilla theatre. Interactive rhythms and crowd participation bridge the gap between the artists and the audience, who become essential participants in the performance.

Thursday, March 2, 2017, brings contemporary violinist Daniel Davis for a performance in Lane Manicur Hall. With charisma and brilliant technique, Davis and his band offer a performance that takes the violin into the modern musical landscape by fusing elements of hip-hop, R&B, jazz and pop. The Post and Courier declared that “Daniel D. makes the violin cool.”

A cappella singing group The Filharmonic arrives on Thursday, April 6, for a performance in Lane Manicur Hall. The talented group of young Filipino-Americans first gained national attention in the semi-finals of NBC’s competition show, “The Sing-Off,” and through their appearance in “Pitch Perfect 2” as Team Philippines/Manila Envy. reported, “Whether it’s a new rendition of a Top 100 hit like ‘Work’ by Rihanna or mashing up five different tracks into one seamless song, The Filharmonic knows how to put their own signature spin on every piece of music they touch.”

The performance of Cover Drive is free. Other On the EDGE tickets are $15 and will be available beginning Sept. 1. Tickets may be ordered by calling 1-866-849-9237 or 301-687-3137 or by visiting
