City of Frostburg Will Present Daylong Activities with “Storybook Holiday”

The city of Frostburg will be transformed into a holiday winter wonderland, as local organizations come together to present “Frostburg’s Storybook Holiday,” a daylong event of seasonal activities, on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The opening celebration will occur in the courtyard of St. Michael’s Church on Main Street with music and festivities. Multiple events will take place at various locations throughout the city.

Holiday storybook readings will take place from 11 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 2 p.m. at Main Street Books, the Frostburg Community Library and Thrasher Carriage Museum. Drawings for a free book will be held at each location.

Frostburg’s City Place on Water Street will host a variety of activities throughout the day. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., children may visit the “Secret Elves’ Workshop.” For $1, the children can choose a craft to make and wrap as a “secret” gift. They may also visit the “Letters to Santa” station, where they can write and mail their letters to Santa Claus. Throughout the day, vendor booths will also be selling crafts and artwork. Lumps of coal will also be on sale, as a gift for that “special someone.”

Restaurants and stores will be open, with special holiday offerings, and will showcase window decorations created by Beall, Frost, Mount Savage and St. Michael’s school children. All restaurant/store patrons will receive a commemorative bookmark and will be able to gather special bookmark stickers at participating retailers. Once a person receives five stickers, he or she will be able to redeem the bookmark for a special treat.

The sidewalks of Frostburg will feature wandering carolers, musicians and elves. Hot cocoa, hot cider, wassail and hot chestnuts will be available at several locations. From 1 to 5 p.m., free carriage rides will be leaving from the new Armstrong Insurance site on Water Street (across from City Place).

From 5 to 7 p.m., luminaries will line the sidewalks of local churches, which will open their doors to the public, presenting music and a time of quiet reflection.

The celebration wraps up with two events. At 7 p.m., a holiday program will be presented at City Place, with a tree lighting ceremony, musical programs, cookies, cocoa and a visit from St. Nick. At 8 p.m., the Palace Theatre will host a one-time showing of Frank Capra’s classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance at Main Street Books, the Mary Carol Shop, Armstrong Insurance and J.R.’s Custom Screen Printing. For more information, call 301-687-4254, 301-687-4420 or 301-689-6900.

Parking is free throughout the entire day and evening.
