Commemorative Quilt to be Raffled by FSU's Children's Literature Centre

An impressive collection of children's literature authors and illustrators have helped create a quilt that will be sold by raffle to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Frostburg State University's Children's Literature Festival.

The 2002 Spring Festival of Children's Literature, "A Patchwork of Story: Celebrating 20 Years of Children's Literature," will highlight the raffle as a fundraising effort to help support the Centre and its future events and activities. Set for April 26 and 27, the Festival features authors and illustrators Peter Catalanotto, Floyd Cooper, Patricia Reilly Giff and Martin Waddell.

Composed of 59 squares, each measuring six square inches, the quilt includes drawings, signatures and messages from many noted names in the world of children's literature. All contributors from the United States and around the globe have participated in previous events sponsored by the Centre.

"We're absolutely amazed at how well it's turned out," says Dr. William Bingman, director of FSU's Centre. "It will be a treasure for whomever wins it."

According to Bingman, the idea for a Commemorative Quilt was conceived by the late Estelle Williamson, a longtime supporter of the FSU Children's Literature Centre.

Bingman enlisted help from the Creative Needle Quilters and Jay Tarleton of Cumberland and Linda Leathersitch to arrange and stitch the squares on a suitable backing.

The finished product, which measures five square feet, will find a home when the raffle is completed next October.
