Community Encouraged to Register for I Swim for Bob Day
I Swim for Bob Day features a variety of games, all for a good cause.

Whether on water or land, the late Frostburg State University student-athlete Bob Norr always had a smile on his face.

“He was the most kind-hearted adventurer you would ever want to meet,” said Dr. Diane Blankenship, associate professor of Recreation and Parks Management, one of Norr's instructors.

The FSU Recreation and Parks Management major died in a kayaking accident in January 2012, and his passion lives on through the annual I Swim for Bob Day – Discover Your Own Adventure as well as the Robert A. Norr Presidential Merit Scholarship through the FSU Foundation.

To celebrate Norr’s life and help future FSU students, the third annual I Swim for Bob Day invites the community, in addition to alumni and the campus, to help raise funds for the scholarship. The event is the chief fundraiser for the scholarship to honor Norr, who was a member of the FSU Swim Team.

The fun-filled family event is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, in the lower level of FSU’s Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center.

I Swim for Bob Day incorporates games that personified Norr: full of fun, friendship and activity. The event features laser tag, capture the flag, 12-minute kickball, dodge ball, a climbing wall, water volleyball, water basketball and water polo.

“I think what makes it a great event is it is a celebration of life and doing what Bob loved to do and what recreation majors love to do: Get together and have one heck of a good time,” Blankenship said.

Four classes across two semesters help plan, produce and evaluate the event. Students in the RECR 491 Practicum and Professional Seminar plan the event analyzing a research paper by spring students in the RECR 388 Research Methods in Recreation and Parks class. The practicum class in the spring gears up to manage the event while RECR 380 Recreation Leadership students supervise activities and RECR 388 Research Methods in Recreation and Parks runs registration, helps with activities and writes the program evaluation report. The cycle begins anew in the fall semester.

Registration costs $10 per person and $40 for a team of five. The community can register in person at the Lane Center March 25 to 27, online at www.frostburg.edu/rpm/i-swim-for-bob-day-registration or at the door on March 28.

Teams that sign up for the event can compete against each other in laser tag, water basketball, water volleyball and other events. Single registrants will be paired up with fellow single participants to form teams.
