Cross Country Opens Season with Strong Performances at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, PA — Both the Frostburg State men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their seasons with strong performances Saturday at Shippensburg in a meet against the host Red Raiders, Hagerstown Community College and a team of Shippensburg alumni.

The Bobcat women finished with 44 points to place second behind Shipppensburg, one of the top cross country program in all of Division II. The Ship women's alumni team was third with 70 points, while HCC ran an incomplete team and therefore did not place.

The FSU men placed third with 64 points behind champion Shippensburg (28) and runner-up Ship alumni (38). HCC was fourth with 116 points.

Junior Bonnie Axman (Burke, Va./James Robinson) highlighted the day for the Bobcats, winning the women's 4,000-meter race with a time of 14:40. She maintained her lead the entire race and finished with the second fastest time ever on the course (14:17 by Ship alum Amy Pyles in 2001).

Freshman Jennifer Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) had a solid debut, placing eighth with a time of 16:56, while senior Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) finished 14th in 17:34.

Sophomore Katie Lyell (Newark, Del./Newark) and freshman Megan Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) capped the scoring for the FSU women by placing 17th (18:09) and 22nd (19:55), respectively.

Junior Ed May (Bryantown, Md./La Plata) paced FSU's men with a seventh-place finish, running the 6,000-meter course in 20:00.

Sophomore Curt Ruble (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) was 10th in 20:13, while senior Ron Lipscomb (Avilton, Md./Northern Garrett) placed 19th in 20:50.

Freshmen Brian Leiter (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Marshal Lawrence (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) capped the scoring for FSU by placing 21st (20:52) and 22nd (20:58), respectively.

The Bobcats outdid themselves this year by having five men's runners complete the course in under 21 minutes. Last season FSU had just one.

“This is our best start in our five years running in this meet,” said FSU fifth-year head coach Randy Lowe. “Ed and Curt ran a great race and were backed solidly by Ron, Brian and Marshall.

"On the women’s side, Bonnie ran an outstanding time. She looked like she was cruising the entire race. Jennifer also ran a great race for her collegiate debut.”

Frostburg State returns to action Saturday, September 10 at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational.
