Cross Country Opens with Strong Performances at Shippensburg Invite

SHIPPENSBURG, PA — The Frostburg State men's and women's cross country teams opened the season with strong performances at the Shippensburg Invitational Saturday.

The Bobcat men placed fourth out of four teams with 89 points, while the women scored 49 points to finish second behind host Shippensburg. The course was 6,000 meters for men and 4,000 meters for women.

"This was really more of a fact-finding meet for us," said third-year FSU head coach Randy Lowe. "We're coming right out of camp, and we looked a bit tired against schools who started a week earlier than us. Both squads are ahead of where we were at this time last year, and I've very pleased with our performances today against two excellent programs."

Sophomore Ed May (Bryantown, Md./La Plata) led the FSU men with an impressive fifth-place finish in 20:40, 75 seconds faster than his time at last year's meet. He was just 12 seconds behind Dan Helfrick, Shippensburg's top runner.

Junior Mike Replogle (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) was 18th in 21:46, while sophomore Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) finished 23rd in 21:58.

Freshmen Scott Yanus (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and Andy Watson (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) closed out the FSU scoring, finishing 28th (22:24) and 29th (22:29), respectively.

Freshman Bonnie Axman (Burke, Va./James Robinson) enjoyed an excellent collegiate debut, finishing in seventh place with a time of 17:03.

Senior captain Beth Sauder (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) was 13th in 18:00, while sophomore Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was 16th in 18:17.

Freshmen Tiffany McPhatter (Lanham, Md./Central), Sheila Kurtz (Thurmont, Md./Boonsboro) and Michelle Carlquist (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) also had solid debuts. McPhatter finished 22nd (19:25), Kurtz 24th (19:34) and Carlquist (21:27).

"Ed had a break-through race, and Bonnie ran faster than our top woman at this event last year and will have a tremendous season," said Lowe.

The Bobcats return to action September 13 at the Lebanon Valley Invitational.
