Cross Country Women Second, Men Fourth at Season-Opening Shippensburg Invitational

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Frostburg State women’s cross country team tied for second place and the men captured fourth at the season-opening Shippensburg University Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Jennifer Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) and junior Curt Ruble (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) were FSU’s top finishers. Patton led the women with a seventh-place finish, running the 4,000-meter course in 16:50, while Ruble was sixth in the men’s race finishing the 6,000-meters in 20:20.

Freshman Gwen Massey (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) and junior Kara Wastler (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro (Hagerstown CC)) were also solid for the women. Massey was ninth overall with a time of 16:55 while Wastler was 10th in 16:57.

Rounding out the top five for the Bobcats were freshman Christina Aumand (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Huntingtown) and junior Katie Lyell (Newark, Del./Newark). Aumand was 24th (17:54) and Lyell captured 25th (17:56).

The Frostburg State men had one other top-10 finisher, senior Andy Watson (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) recorded an eighth-place finish with a time of 20:21. Senior Andrew Parker (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) was third on the men’s squad and 31st overall in 21:48.

Junior Zach Gaudette (Queenstown, Md./Kent Island) and freshman Dustin Eagle (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) finished back-to-back in 38th (22:09) and 39th (22:13), respectively.

“I’m very pleased with the women’s team performance as well as the solid races run by the men,” said Head Coach Randy Lowe. “Our team’s performance was in sync with our training at this point in the season. We’re looking forward to being challenged at Bloomsburg in two weeks, a meet consisting primarily of NCAA Division II teams."

Frostburg State returns to action Saturday, September 16 at the Bloomsburg University Husky Invitational.
