Culbert and Cook Earn Frostburg State Athlete of the Year Honors

FROSTBURG, Md. — Senior Kevin Culbert (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year, while senior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) took home Female Athlete of the Year honors at the Frostburg State University Athletics Awards Banquet held Sunday, May 13.

Culbert was an all-american defensive end for the Bobcats. This past season, he was named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-American first team, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-South Region first team, All-American second team, All-South Region first team and ECAC All-Southwest Region first team.

Culbert was also named the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-South Region Defensive Lineman of the Year and Atlantic Central Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was invited to play in the East Coast Bowl (Nov. 26 in Petersburg, Virginia) and the Aztec Bowl (Dec. 17 in Toluca, Mexico).

Culbert finished the season ranked first in the nation in tackles for loss per game (3.0), sacks per game (1.5), total sacks (17.0) and tackles for loss (33.0). He also ranked 61st with 5.6 solo tackles per game. His 4.5 total sacks in an FSU win over Seton Hill (11/22), is the third highest single-game performance in NCAA Division III this season.

Cook was a two-year starter for the Bobcats after transferring from nearby Allegany College. Cook was a first-team All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference selection after posting a 23-8 overall record including a 12-3 conference slate with a team-best 2.08 ERA. She appeared in 39 games, making 25 starts, including 23 complete games. She recorded 249 strikeouts in 209.2 innings pitched. For the second consecutive year, she threw five shutouts tying the single-season record.

Cook also set seven single-season records this spring at FSU. She set the mark for games, starts, innings pitched, complete games, strikeouts, wins and strikeouts per seven innings (8.31).
