Culbert, Olson Earn Football Gazette All-South Region Honors

ABILENE, TEX. — Frostburg State University junior Kevin Culbert (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and senior Roy Olson (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) have been named to the 2003 Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA Division III All-South Region Football Team.

Culbert, a 6-5, 235-pound defensive end, was voted to the All-South first team after leading the Bobcats with 80 tackles, 47 solo tackles, 22 tackles for losses, 10.0 sacks and two forced fumbles.

He added three pass breakups, a forced fumble, a blocked kick and a safety.

Culbert has already taken home numerous honors for his efforts this season. He was named the Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) Co-Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team All-ACFC accolades.

He was also selected the ACFC Defensive Player of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Southwest Defensive Player of the Week twice and was named to the National Team of the Week once.

Olson, a 6-0, 240-pound tight end, earned second-team All-South region honors after catching 26 passes for a team-high 409 yards (15.7 avg.) and four touchdowns.

He led FSU in receiving yards for the second consecutive season and grabbed the game-winning touchdown pass in FSU's exciting 15-14 win over Salisbury that clinched the Bobcats' second consecutive conference title and third straight Regents' Cup crown.

Olson, who earned first-team All-ACFC honors the second straight year, is also one of 42 players recently selected to play for the United States Division III all-star team that will face the Mexican National Team in the 2003 Aztec Bowl December 13 in Cancun, Mexico.

A total of 78 players were chosen for the Football Gazette All-South Region team by sports information directors from the 63 schools that sponsor football in the South Region. The All-South Region first- and second-team selections will now be on the national ballot used to choose the 2003 Football Gazette All-American Team.
