Despite Strong Individual Performances, Swimming Falls to Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - The Frostburg State swimming teams were swept by non-conference opponent Hood, Wednesday afternoon at the Hood Aquatics Center.

The Bobcat men lost 81-76 while the women stumbled to a 96-75 defeat.

Junior Will Cross (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and sophomore Charlie Reimers (Leonard, Md./Patuxent) led the way for the men. Cross won the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.06), recorded second in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:04.25) and captured third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:51.35) while Reimers took home first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:56.96) and third in both the 100-yard freestyle (58.03) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.53).

Freshman Matt Horton (Centerville, Va./Westfield) was the only other swimmer on the men’s side to capture victory, winning the 200-yard butterfly in 2:20.78. He also recorded third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.91.

Junior Brandon Thornton (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills (Howard CC)) and freshmen Griffen Williams (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) and Scott Gantz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) churned out solid efforts, with each recording a pair of second-place finishes each.

Thornton captured runner-up honors in the 50-yard freestyle (24.38) and 100-yard freestyle (54.22), Williams was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.75) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:16.37) and Gantz recorded second place in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.53) and 200-yard backstroke (2:28.85).

Freshman Thirza Roberto (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led the Bobcat women with a pair of individual first-place finishes. She won the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.60) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.43) and teamed with junior Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and sophomores Malinda Yost (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) and Michelle Nash (Columbia, Md./Hammond) to take victory in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:47.91.

Dunnigan also recorded an individual win, taking first in 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.94. Meanwhile, she captured second in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:40.19) and the 100-yard freestyle (11:55.12).

Yost earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (27.31) and 100-yard freestyle (1:00.46) while Falls was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.94) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (6:09.03).

Frostburg State returns to action Saturday, February 3 when it travels to W. Va. Wesleyan at 1:00 pm.
