Dr. Johnston Hegeman Named Interim Vice President for Student Affairs at FSU

Dr. Johnston “Jay” Hegeman has been named the interim vice president for Student Affairs at Frostburg State University, where he will serve while Dr. Tom Bowling, the current vice president, serves as interim president.

Hegeman is the associate provost and registrar and previously served as associate vice president for Student Affairs at FSU. Since 1976, he has held a number of administrative positions that have focused primarily on student success and continues that role by leading the newly established Academic Success Network. He is involved with many planning groups on campus, including the Enrollment Management Committee, the President’s Advisory Committee for Institutional Effectiveness and the Middle States Self-Study Steering Committee and is an evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Hegeman also co-teaches a course he developed, Higher Education Structure and Governance, for the Doctor of Education program and teaches a section of FSU’s first-year seminar course, Introduction to Higher Education.

“Dr. Hegeman’s deep understanding of all aspects of the University will serve us well during this critical transition time,” Bowling said. “His ability to work effectively with others has enabled him to earn the respect of individuals throughout the campus.”

Hegeman earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Frostburg and his doctorate from West Virginia University. His dissertation, “The Use of Assessment for Institutional Sensemaking by Top Administrative Officials,” focused on the relationship between strategic thinking and institutional effectiveness. Hegeman was a student-athlete at Frostburg and for years coached the men’s soccer team. He was inducted into the Bobcat Hall of Fame in 2011.
