Edelman's Grand Slam Helps Baseball Rally Past Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, GA — Sophomore Eric Edelman (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) belted a pinch-hit grand slam as part of a six-run seventh inning to help Frostburg State rally past host Oglethorpe University, 9-3, Wednesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (6-5) trailed, 3-0, entering the seventh inning before capitalizing on several Oglethorpe miscues.

FSU loaded the bases with two outs thanks to two hit batters and an error, and senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) and junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) followed with RBI-singles to bring FSU to within one.

Edelman then greeted Petrel reliever Jonathan Baker with a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Bobcats in front for good.

FSU added two runs in the eight on a Mannon RBI-double and another Oglethorpe error before completing the scoring in the ninth on a squeeze bunt by sophomore Dave Lydon (White Plains, Md./McDonough).

Oglethorpe (11-9) opened the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly and built a 3-0 lead in the sixth on a pair of RBI-singles.

Bobcat freshman Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. He struck out four and walked one to improve to 2-1.

Fellow FSU rookie Kevin Franc (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) was sharp in his collegiate debut, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Oglethorpe junior Dennis Rasmussen took the loss after giving up five unearned runs on two hits and two hit batters in just 2/3 of an inning.

Senior Chris Hammond (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Mannon and Simpson were each 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Frostburg State wraps up its southern road trip with a nine-inning contest at La Grange (Ga.) College Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The Bobcats will then host Penn State Behrend in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick beginning at 1:00 p.m.
