Facilitated Communication Specialist to Speak at FSU Special Education Institute

Dr. Mayer Shevin, a specialist in helping to meet the communication needs of non-verbal individuals, will be a featured speaker at Frostburg State University on Tuesday, July 11, during FSU's Fourth Annual Special Education Summer Institute.

Shevin, a professional consultant to individuals with disabilities and the people, communities and organizations in their lives, will work with area teachers from 8:30 to 2 p.m. in room 201 of the Lane University Center. Representatives from community agencies, local clergy, parents and family members supporting individuals with disabilities are invited. Shevin, from Syracuse, N.Y., has presented many workshops on facilitated communication throughout the U.S. and elsewhere, both independently and on behalf of the Facilitated Communication Institute of Syracuse University.

Lunch will be provided for this event. In order to have an accurate lunch count, please contact Dr. Oma Gail Simmons at (301) 687-4432 or to indicate your attendance. The financial support for this event has come from the local Order of the Alhambra in Cumberland.

This institute, Communication Issues in Special Education, runs from July 10 to 14 and is also a graduate course, SPED 691, Seminar in Special Education and EDUC 590, Current Issues in Special Education. Contact Simmons for more information.
