Ferguson Gives Noble Effort But Comes Up Short at NCAA Championships

GREENCASTLE, IND — Frostburg State junior Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) couldn't make the times required to advance to Saturday's final rounds in two events at the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor National Track & Field Championships Friday at Depauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

Ferguson became ill on the trip to Indiana but insisted on competing and as a result, could not perform at her expected high level.

Ferguson, who was seeded first in the 55-meter dash had to settle for a time of 7.38. Also seeded 15th in the 400-meter dash, Ferguson came up short with a time of 59.45

Ferguson had qualified for the 55-meter dash with a conversion time of 7.03 and qualified for the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.73.

"She gave a great effort and I'm very proud of her," said head coach Felix Moreno. "She kept her form like a true athlete considering the situation. She still has another season to look forward to and she's going to be ready."

The Frostburg State Outdoor Track & Field team will be competing on Saturday, March 15, at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.
