Field Hockey Gets Shutout By Montclair State

Montclair, N.J.– Montclair State received goals from nine different players and shutout Frostburg State 10-0 on Saturday afternoon at Sprague Field.

Montclair State improved to 3-0 on the season, while Frostburg State falls to 0-4. MSU senior Jen Soss scored twice and added an assist while sophomore Jenna Gallo added a goal and three assists.

Amanda Runion (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) had 10 saves while Jessica Brittingham (Pocomoke, MD/Pocomoke) added seven for Frostburg State.

Runion made a pair of saves early to keep MSU off the board, but the Red Hawks broke through at the 12-minute mark. Off a penalty corner, Soss and Gallo played a perfect give-and-go with Soss smacking in a shot from five yards out for a 1-0 Red Hawk lead. Just over seven minutes later, the duo duplicated their effort to push the lead to two and later reversed roles to give Montclair a 3-0 advantage at the 20:55 mark as Gallo slapped in a shot from six yards on the right side.

Montclair State freshman Megan Walsh notched her first career goal 50 seconds later as she knocked in a rebound and then assisted on Rebecca Dobiesz’ goal at 26:40 to put the Red Hawks in front, 5-0. Dobiesz would then assist on MSU’s Megan Pietrunti’s first career tally as Montclair took a 6-0 lead into halftime.

Frostburg was outshot in the game, 36-3, but the Bobcats just missed opportunities to score. MSU goalkeeper Jacquie Supko kicked away a loose ball in front of the cage that deflected off Laura Weimer (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) and back toward the goal. The ball got past Supko, however Montclair defender Kim Demkowicz was there to sweep the ball away. Then in the second half, Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) had a one-on-one shot stopped by Jackie DeRicco, who made a sprawling save.

Jennifer Tanis, Brisa Casas, Brittany Palko each scored goals for Montclair State before freshman Kelly Jurczynski capped off the scoring at 62:10.

The Bobcats continue action in the Montclair State/William Paterson Invitational on Sunday, September 10 when they battle William Paterson at 1:00 pm.
