Field Hockey Takes Down Roanoke 2-1 in Double Overtime

FROSTBURG, PA —The Bobcats battled vigorously to defeat Roanoke College 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday. New blood was eager to win as freshman Heidi Zook (Twin Valley/Elverson, Pa.) and Tawni Buck (Perryville/Perryville, Md.) each scored to help the Bobcats to a big victory and a 6-4 season record.

The first half was even as the ball was distributed all over the field. Both teams had some scoring opportunities, but were broken up by the respective defenses. After dealing three penalty corners, Zook danced through a pocket of defenders and found the net at 11:17. Down 0-1, Roanoke kept its intensity level up until the end of the half, but could not reply.

In the second half, Roanoke charged the Bobcat goal over and over and had numerous penalty corners. Finally, after attacking countless times, Kaylin Leavitt scored for the Maroons off an assist from Nicole Yodice at 26:05. With the score now at 1-1, both teams contined to strike, but had near misses that drove the game to its first overtime.

At four minutes in the first overtime, the Maroons took a penalty stroke, but were halted by a huge stop from goalie Kristin Cousin (South River/Edgewater, Md.) Aggressive play with close opportunities continued for both teams and the game went to its second overtime.

Senior Kim Faust (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) took a big shot with a near miss, and Zook had a big charge up the field, but with no goal. Finally, after a lot of hard work by FSU, Buck was allowed to set up for a penalty stroke at 9:39 and blasted the ball into the Roanoke goal, clinching the game for FSU.

The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, September 29th at St. Mary's College of Maryland at 2:00 p.m.
