Five Homeruns And A Combined 23 Runs Helps Baseball Sweep St. Joseph's (N.Y.)

FROSTBURG, Md. -The Frostburg State baseball team won two games, Sunday, earning a sweep of St. Joseph’s (N.Y.), 8-2 and 15-2.

FSU (9-5) scored eight runs on 11 hits in game one and broke out in the night cap with season highs in runs (15), hits (16) and homeruns (5). Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led the Bobcats at the plate going a combined 3-for-7 with six RBIs, three runs scored with a double and a homerun. Classmate Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU) was 5-for-8 with three RBIs, three runs scored with a triple, a double and a homerun.

In the opener, FSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Burke led things off with a triple. The next batter, senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) plated Burke on a ground out to the pitcher. Junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) followed up Gitzen’s at-bat with a double down the left-field line. Senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) then singled, moving Speights to third and Peake singled home Speights for second run of the inning.

Two batters later, junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) singled home Barone and Peake scored the final run of the inning on an error by the Golden Eagle infield.

St. Joseph’s (1-3) cut into the FSU lead with one run in the third and one in the fourth. Joe Dellauniversita had an RBI single to score the first run Eduin Delgado hit a solo homerun for the second.

Two innings later in the bottom of the sixth, Frostburg State tacked on four insurance runs for an 8-2 advantage. Senior Todd Homes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) led off with a double and scored three batters later when Gitzen doubled to left center. Barone then recorded a two-run single that plated Gitzen and Burke and senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) ended the scoring with a double that scored Speights.

Freshman Rob Mathias (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Potomac State)) earned his third win of the season for Frostburg State, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs on six hits. Chris Patronaggio endured the loss for the Golden Eagles, lasting 3.0 innings and giving up fours runs (three earned) on six hits.

In the second game, the Bobcats broke open a 5-2 lead with five runs in both the fifth and six innings for their highest scoring output of the spring. FSU posted a season-high .355 batting average as a team.

Burke opened the scoring in the third with a two-run homerun and Speights singled home freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) for a 3-0 lead.

After SJC crossed the plate for a run in the top of the fourth, Frostburg State posted two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) singled home Peake and later scored when Burke doubled to center.

Frostburg State came alive in the next two innings, posting 10 total runs. In the fifth, Peake scored Barone and Speights with a two-run double. After Holmes walked, Mitchell smacked a two-run homerun and Daddura finished the outburst with a solo homer. In the sixth, Peake continued his hot bat by hitting a three-run homerun, his first of the season. Holmes then hit a solo shot over the outfield fence and Derr singled home junior Andrew Sacks (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) for the game’s final run.

Sophomore Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) earned his second win of the season after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on eights hits. Rob Wilcox took the loss for the Golden Eagles after pitching 4.0 innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits.

FSU returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a single nine-inning game at 2:30 pm.
